Scope and Contents

This collection contains oral history interviews with Bowie K. Kuhn conducted by Marty Appel between 1985 and 1987. These oral histories were used during the writing of Kuhn's autobiography "Hardball" published in 1988.

Biographical / Historical

Bowie Kent Kuhn, October 28, 1926 – March 15, 2007, was an American lawyer and sports administrator who served as the fifth Commissioner of Major League Baseball from February 4, 1969, to September 30, 1984. He served as legal counsel for Major League Baseball owners for almost 20 years prior to his election as commissioner.

Martin E. Appel (born August 7, 1948) is an American public relations and sports management executive, television executive producer, baseball historian and author.

Appel served as Public Relations Director for the New York Yankees from 1973 to 1977. He has written over 20 books, including Pinstripe Empire: The New York Yankees from Before the Babe to After the Boss and Casey Stengel: Baseball’s Greatest Character. Abstract

This is a collection of oral history interview audiotapes relating to the life and career of Bowie Kuhn.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into one series and chronologically. Ostensibly this order replicates the order in which the interviews were conducted.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

The audio cassettes are located in cold vault storage and must be acclimated before delivery to the research room.

Custodial History

The audiocassettes in this collection were created by Marty Appel while conducting interviews with Bowie Kuhn to be used in the creation of Kuhn's autobiography "Hardball" published in 1998. The audiocassettes were donated by the interviewer in 2009.

No materials were removed during accessioning or processing.

Existence and Location of Copies

Some CD copies of each 60 minute side of the original audiocassettes have been created and are stored in the same archival box as the audiocassettes.
