Scope and Contents

The scrapbooks in this collection relate to the career of Babe Ruth, between 1921 and 1935. They were created by his manager Christy Walsh. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, telegrams, photographs, endorsements, schedules, and cartoons. The subjects covered include batting titles, contract negotiations, Ruth as an actor, barnstorming, suspensions, and retirement.

Biographical / Historical

Christy Walsh was a pioneer of sports licensing. In 1921, he started his own syndicate, creating a major industry for stars like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and others. Walsh was a sports director for the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair.

A collection of 25 scrapbooks relating to the career of Babe Ruth between 1921 and 1935. These were created by his manager, Christy Walsh.

This collection of scrapbooks was originally a set of 10 volumes. After conservation, it is now 10 volumes, with each volume having multiple parts. Volume 1, parts 1, 2, 3; Volume 2, parts 1, 2; Volume 3, parts 1, 2; Volumbe 4, parts 1, 2, 3; Volume 5, parts 1, 2, 3; Volume 6, parts 1, 2; Volume 7, parts 1, 2, 3; Volume 8, parts 1, 2; Volume 9, parts 1, 2; Volume 10, parts 1, 2, 3.

Processing Information

These scrapbooks were conserved at NEDCC around 2000. Each page was encapsulated and bound in large, blue hard covers, labeled with its accession number, volume and part number. The original 10 volumes expanded to 25.
