Scope and Contents

A collection of materials created and/or compiled by Dr. Lawrence Hogan in the writing of his book titled, "The Forgotten History of African American Baseball". This collection includes correspondence, research notes, newspaper clippings, and articles. Also included are photocopies of photographs used in the book, and a Negro League timeline, 1839-1931, compiled by Larry Lester. The newspaper clippings are primarily from the Chicago Defender and the Newark Evening News. Box 2 includes folders of what appears to be exhibit scripts for four panels, undated.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Larry Hogan is Professor Emeritus of History from Union College in New Jersey, author of The Forgotten History of African American Baseball, and principal author and editor of Shades of Glory published by National Geographic, as well as several other books on the history of Blacks in America. He is Executive Director of the documentary Before You Can Say Jackie Robinson: Black Baseball in America in the Era of the Color Line. His exhibit on the history of Black baseball has been displayed at venues across the country. Dr. Hogan has presented at the Schomburg Center for the Study of African American Culture of the New York Public Library, where he displayed an exhibit on the history of Black baseball, and has spoken at the headquarters of the National Geographic Society in Washington, D,C. the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. His most recent work is Harlem’s First Citizen: John Howard Johnson, A Priest, and his People, in the Making of Harlem.
