Scope and Contents

A collection of newspaper clippings from various sources such as The Sporting News, the New York Clipper, Chicago Tribune, and Sporting Life. Newspaper articles from Colorado, California, Hawaii, Australia, Egypt, Italy and France. Many articles were used, including those written by Cap Anson, A.G. Spalding, Harry Clay Palmer, and Francis C. Richter. Photocopies of potential photographs, publishing contracts and correspondence are part of this collection.

Biographical / Historical

Mark Lamster is a writer on the arts and culture, with his primary fields of interest and expertise being architecture and design. He is an Associate American Editor of the Architectural Review, a contributing editor to Design Observer, and a Fellow of the Forum for Urban Design. His work appears with regularity in national publications, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Wall Street Journal. “Spalding’s World Tour” was an Editor’s Choice selection of the New York Times Book Review. The Spalding World Tour was a baseball tournament financed by the sports company Spalding. The tour began in October 1888 to April 1889, the baseball tour group travelled to Egypt, Italy, France, England, Ireland and the United States. The purpose of the world tour was to promote the sport of Baseball nationally across the United States and globally.
