Goudey Gum Co.'s first baseball card issue was a 239-card effort in 1933. The cards are color art reproductions of either portrait or action photos. The numbered cards measure 2-3/8" x 2-7/8" and feature a short player biography on the back. Card #106 (Napoleon Lajoie) is listed in the set though it was not actually issued until 1934. The card is very scarce and is unique in that it carries a 1934 design front and a 1933 back.

The 1934 Goudey set contains 96 cards (2-3/8" x 2-7/8") that features a color art reprodction of players photographs. Card fronts have two different designs; one featuring a small portrait of Lou Gehrig with the words "Lou Gehrig says..." inside a blue strip at the bottom, while the other design carries a red "Chuck Klein says..." strip and also his photo. The card backs contain a short player biography that purports to have been written by Gehrig or Klein.

The 1936 Goudey set consists of black and white cards measuring 2-3/8" x 2-7/8". A facsimile autograph is positioned on the card fronts. Backs contain a breif player biography and were designed to be used to play a baseball game. Different game situations (out, single, double, etc.) are givem on each card. Numerous front and back combonations exist in the set.

Goudey Wide Pens, R314 Type 1, BL-2024-36, 1936

Scope and Contents

These in-store premiums are known to collectors as "Wide Pens" because of the distinctive, thick style of cursive printing used for the facsimile autographs. Cardss have a 3-1/4" x 5-1/2" black-and-white, unnumbered format. Type 1 cards have bordered photos with"LITHO IN U.S.A in the bottom border, with the exception of card 112a (Lloyd Waner).

Goudey Big League Baseball Movies, R326 (not complete), 1938

Scope and Contents

This set of "flip movies" was comprised of small (2" x 3") booklets whose pages produced a movie effect when flipped rapidly, similar to a penny arcade novelty popular at the time (probably issued in 1937-38). Short biographies on back. There are 13 players in the set; each movie having two clearly labeled parts. The cover of the booklets identify the set as "Big League Baseball Movies." They carry the American Card Catalog designation R326.

The 1935 Goudey set features color portraits of four players (usually) from the same team on each card. Thirty-six card (2-3/8" x 2-7/8") fronts make up the set with 114 front/back combonations existing.
