Scope and Contents

The collection contains audio recordings of interviews conducted by Leo Cloutier as part of his "With Malice Towards None" radio broadcasts and some audio recordings of events that Cloutier was involved in between 1957 and 1976. Most of the interviews were conducted in the early to mid-1970s and include such names as Brooks Robinson, Pete Rose, Lou Piniella, Ron Bloomberg, Bert Blyleven, Jim Kaat, Blue Moon Odom, Frank Robinson, Carlton Fisk, Thurman Munson and more. Interviews were also conducted with baseball team managers such as Earl Weaver and Sparky Anderson, baseball executives such as Haywood Sullivan, Cedric Tallis, Happy Chandler, Chub Feeney and others. Some interviews with baseball writers and broadcasters were also conducted and are part of this collection.

Biographical / Historical

Leo Cloutier (1912-1988) was a sportscaster and writer who covered Major League Baseball from 1933-1988 in daily and weekly columns for newspapers in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Maine. He had a syndicated column in 47 New England newspapers as well as a syndicated radio show for which he conducted one-on-one interviews with many sports legends and others associated with sports.

Abstract

The collection contains audio recordings of interviews conducted by Leo Cloutier as part of his "With Malice Towards None" radio broadcasts and some audio recordings of events that Cloutier was involved in between 1957 and 1976. The interviews are with assorted players, managers, baseball team executives and others associated with the game of baseball.

Arrangement

The audiocassettes and audiotape reels were arranged according to the number assigned to them by the original collector. Audiocassettes were organized into the audiocassette collection of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's Recorded Media archives and the audiotape reels were organized into the reel-to-reel collection of the museum's Recorded Media archives.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

The audiocassettes and audiotape reels are located in cold vault storage and must be acclimated before delivery to the research room. CD copies are available for review.

Appraisal

During processing, one reel of blank audiotape was removed. No other materials were removed during accessioning or processing.

Existence and Location of Copies

CD copies of most of the audio on the cassettes and reels are available for review by request in the Giamatti Research Center.

Processing Information

This collection of audiocassettes and audiotape reels, and their CD copies, was originally classified as a Multi-Media Format (mmf) collection. In 2024, the decision was made to inventory and sort the cassettes and reels into their proper shelf locations in the Recorded Media Archives. At that time, a detailed inventory of the interviews was added to the RMA database.
