Scope and Contents

A collection of 33 standard audiocassettes and CD copies of interviews conducted by Mike Ross for articles and a book about Bobo Newsom. Transcripts of the interviews are included in the collection. Interviewees include his first wife, Lucille and daughter Norma and son Alan, his second wife, Kay, Newsom's family members and friends from his hometown, Allan North, Johnny Vandermeer, Ralph Houk, Eddie Yost, Mark Fidrych, Al Lopez, Ellis Clary, George Kell, Ernie Harwell, Dick Howser, Vince Doyle, Les Moss, Joe Nuxhall, Leo Durocher, Floyd Giebell, Babe Herman, Red Barber, Bobby Bragen, Dick Bartell, Phil Rizzuto, Wade Boggs, Lou Pinella, Monte Irvin, Max Macon, Van Mungo, Herman Helms, John Spencer, Happy Chandler, Don Sutton, Calvin Griffith, Shirley Povich, Luke Appling, Furman Bisher, Andrew Mang, Birdie Tebbets, Hank Greenberg, Paul Richards, Bob Lemon, Mickey Vernon, Hoot Evers, Early Wynn, Jimmy Robertson, Charlie Wardsworth.

Biographical / Historical

Louis Norman "Bobo" Newsom was born on August 11, 1907 in Hartsville, SC. He was the son of Quilline Bufkin Newsom and the former Lillian Holmes Hicks. He and his siblings were born into a farming family and they all helped on the farm. Young Louis was determined to become a ballplayer, playing baseball on is high school team and pitching with Carlisle Prep School in Bamberg, SC. He began his professional career with the Class C Raliegh Capitals in NC and was a late-season call up by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1929 from the Class B Southern Association Macon Peaches of Georgia. Bobo Newsom pitched in the major leagues from 1929 to 1948 and from 1952 to 1953. He pitched for nine different teams and in both the American and National Leagues.

Abstract

This collection contains the original audiocassettes created by the donor when conducting interviews regarding his subject matter, Bobo Newsom. The collection also contains the transcripts of each interview and a CD copy of each cassette.

Arrangement

The collection has been organized by format, with audiocassettes and compact discs stored with their respective formats in the Recorded Media Archives. The transcripts follow the order of the recorded media.

The audio cassettes are located in cold vault storage and must be acclimated before delivery to the research room.
