American League Meetings and Minutes collection
Scope and Contents
This is a collection of American League annual and board of directors meeting minutes starting in 1900 through 1937, and 1972. There are no minutes included in this collection for 1930 through 1933. There are minutes for special meetings, spring meetings and joint meetings between the American, National and Minor Leagues. The handwritten ledger, covering 1900 to 1909, was typewritten for the American League clubs in 1959, and Boston's copy is included.

Biographical / Historical
The American League was originally known as the Western League from 1894 to 1899. The league was reorganized and renamed by Ban Johnson in 1900 and played as a minor league that year. Its intention, however, was to compete with the National League, and did so in 1901. After three years, the rival leagues met in the first World Series. Through the 2008 season, American League teams have won 61 of the 104 World Series played since 1903. League presidents during the time frame of this collection were Ban Johnson from 1901– 1927, Ernest Barnard from 1927–1931 and Will Harridge from 1931–1959.
