Biographical / Historical

George Lawrence Lester was born in Charleston, Arkansas in 1949. Larry is an author, historian, statistical researcher and lecturer specializing in the study of the Negro Leagues in baseball. He is the co-founder of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri and served as its Research Director and Treasurer from 1991-1995.

Lester partnered with the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum from 2000-2004, co-chairing a comprehensive study of African American baseball from the Civil War through the mid-fifties. He also served on the Baseball Hall of Fame's Special Negro Leagues Committee in 2006, helping to select 17 new Negro League players, executives and managers for election to the Hall of Fame.

Abstract

The collection contains audiocassette recordings of interviews and events collected by Larry Lester while conducting research on the Negro Baseball Leagues. The interviews and events were recorded between 1977 and 2003.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged in numerical order according to the call number assigned to each cassette while processing. The entire collection spans CTA 2722 - CTA 2910 in the audiocassette collection in the Recorded Media Archives.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

The audio cassettes are located in cold vault storage and must be acclimated before delivery to the research room.

Custodial History

The materials in this collection were created or collected by Larry Lester and kept by Lester until they were donated to the Museum in 2022.

Appraisal

No materials were removed during accessioning or processing.

Processing Information

Materials in this collection were sent to a processing facility for preservation and digitization. Extensive notes on recordings were also made. Upon return, the original cassettes have been stored in their original cassette cases in acid-free boxes in the Recorded Media Archives.
