Scope and Contents

A collection relating to baseball in and baseball players from Cuba, Venezuela, and Mexico, created and/or compiled by Milton Jamail. Many of the articles are in Spanish.

Series I includes Cuban-related files. There are rosters and some biographical information on select Cuban National Teams, history and rosters for the annual USA vs Cuba series, information through the Cuban newspaper, Granma, on the Baseball Intercontinental Cup. Included are files on individuals which could include articles, and interview transcripts. There is a file with memos from MLB agents regarding Cuban players.

Series II includes research notes, interview transcripts, articles and material broken down by chapter for his book "Venezuelan Bust, Baseball Boom: Andres Reiner and scouting on the new frontier". It also includes information on the start of the Venezuelan Baseball Academy and the Visa process to be in the United States.

Series III includes interviews, notes, articles, clippings, and programs. There is one file that relates to the Mexican All-Star Game in June 1988. There are files that give the history of baseball in Laredo, Texas and an induction banquet program for 2003.

Series IV includes interview transcripts and notes, information on the Baseball Network which was to give minority players more decision-making positions, the Office of Latin-American Affairs, articles, and clippings.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Jamail is a Spanish-speaking journalist and author of several books. He is retired from the Government Department at The University of Texas, and is the author of Full Count: Inside Cuban Baseball He has written for Baseball America, USA Today Sports Weekly, the Washington Post, and a few other papers. He has an academic background in Latin American politics. He was hired by the Tampa Bay Rays to create an educational and cultural program to help Latin American players adjust to life in the USA.

Abstract

A collection of articles, interview transcripts, audiocassettes, research notes, rosters, correspondence, and programs relating to baseball in Cuba, Venezuela and Andres Reiner, and Mexico. This collection was created and/or compiled by Dr. Milton H. Jamail, and is dated between 1912 and 2020.

This collection is arranged into four series. Series I Cuba, Series II Venezuela and Andres Reiner, Series III Mexico, Series IV Miscellaneous Files

Accruals

The first donation was received in 2013 relating to baseball in Cuba. In 2020, a donation was received relating to his book on Andres Reiner and Venezuela. In 2021, further papers were received relating to Cuba, Mexico, and files with winter reports, Baseball Network, etc.
