Scope and Contents

A collection of six cartoons created by Michael with Tug McGraw in 1975 and 1976. From 1974 to 1976, Witte and McGraw collaborated on a nationally syndicated sports-themed comic strip titled "Scroogie". The subjects include Frank Robinson, Nolan Ryan, Johnny Bench, the New York Mets, and an All-Star game. There is one from 1976 that has a game called due to rain and it references Noah's Ark. They are signed by Witte and McGraw.

Biographical / Historical

Michael Witte, 1944-, is an American-born illustrator and cartoonist. He was a regular contributor to TIME, Harper’s, Rolling Stone, Fortune, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. His art has appeared on the covers of The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Newsweek, Forbes and the Princeton Alumni Weekly as well as "The New Yorker Book of" cartoon series.

Tug McGraw, 1944-2004, was a Major League pitcher from 1965 to 1984 for the NY Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. After his retirement, he made frequent appearances as a baseball reporter for WPVI-TV in Philadelphia. Prior to his death, McGraw was able to take part in ceremonies commemorating the closing of Veterans Stadium. McGraw was a 1993 inductee into the New York Mets Hall of Fame and a 1999 honoree onto the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame. Following his passing, the Philadelphia chapter of the BBWAA renamed their annual Good Guy Award the Tug McGraw Good Guy Award.

No materials were removed during accessioning or processing.

Processing Information

The cartoons were originally wrapped in tissue paper and placed in a flat box. In 2011, they were matted, except B-1987-00332, and returned to a flat box.
