A collection of cartoons created by Phil Bissell between 1971 and 1973. The subjects incude labor and salary disputes, the baseball strike of 1972, Hank Aaron's home runs, All-Star games, and Roberto Clemente.

Biographical / Historical

Phil Bissell’s first sports cartoon was published when he was fourteen. After going to Boston School of Practical Arts, he did a stint in the army. He then became an office boy for the Christian Science Monitor, soon graduating to be their sports cartoonist. He was sports cartoonist for the Boston Herald and Boston Globe from 1953 to 1965, and the Worcester Evening Gazette. He designed the official logo of the Boston Patriots, “Pat Patriot”, which was used from 1961-1992.

Appraisal

No materials were removed during accessioning or processing.

Processing Information

The cartoons were originally individually wrapped in tissue paper and in a flat box. The summer of 2011, each was matted and placed in a new flat box.
