Scope and Contents

This is a collection of illustrations created by Leo Hershfield between 1933 and 1949, with a reprint created in 1960. Folders 1-7 contain illustrations by Leo Hershfield from the book "Three Men on Third" written by Ira L. Smith and H. Allen Smith, published in 1951. Folders 8-11 contains illustrations by Leo Hershfield from the book "Low and Inside", also by Ira L. Smith and H. Allen Smith, published in 1949. Folders 12 and 13 contain other illustrations by Hershfield, including one reprint.

Biographical / Historical

Leo Hershfield, 1904-1979, was a prominent illustrator and a courtroom artist for NBC News. He was referred to as the “Dean of Courtroom Artists” since he was the first modern artist to sketch for TV news in the 1950s and covered 147 trials. In the 1930s, he worked for the Chattanooga Times and The New York Times. In the 1940s and 1950s, he illustrated for Reader’s Digest, The Saturday Evening Post, and Kiplinger’s Changing Times. In the 1950s and 1960s, he created vivid political cartoons as cover art for the Democratic Digest. His artwork was used in more than 55 books. He worked with pencil, pen and ink, watercolor, block printing, wood carving, metal sculpture and photography.

Appraisal

No materials were removed during accessioning or processing.

Processing Information

Illustrations were placed in acid-free folders and in a flat box. Illustrations in folders 1 through 7, and folders 12-13, were conserved with a grant from the Yawkey Foundation 2011 at the North East Document Conservation Center in 2012.
