Biographical / Historical

William was born on January 29, 1922, in Minneapolis. He lived in Chicago, Seattle and California before graduating from Minneapolis' Roosevelt High School in 1940. He joined the Navy in 1941, serving as a signalman in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. After his ship was sunk by a German U-boat, he was accepted for Officer Training School at Dartmouth College. He met Pauline at a USO and married her in 1946. They moved to New York where he attended art school and then worked for 15 years as a commercial artist and writer. In 1965, they moved to the Twin Cities, where he worked for Art Instruction Schools, Trend Enterprises and part-time as a sports cartoonist for the St. Paul Dispatch. Bill and Polly started their own company, Blip Productions, producing educational materials for schools. Bill was a member of the National Cartoonists' Society.
