Scope and Contents

Correspondence to and from American League teams discussing dates of spring training games. Correspondence to and from American League umpires relating to their assignments and travel expenses. Included are large charts which have the teams with dates, opponents, and umpire assigned. Replies from umpires are nearly all handwritten.

Biographical / Historical

Spring training is a series of practices and exhibition games preceding the start of the regular season in MLB. Spring training allows new players to try out for roster and position spots, and gives established players practice time prior to competitive play. Teams that train in Arizona form the Cactus League and Florida-training clubs form the Grapefruit League.
