Scope and Contents

Cy Jones wrote to many famous athletes and executives to ask for autographs, uniforms, and equipment. Letters, notes, and postcards from such notables as Kenesaw Mountain Landis, Ford Frick, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. Also included is a note from Sid Luckman, an NFL quarterback. Eddie Collins' letters are typed and signed by his secretary and Hank Greenberg is signed with "Lt" for Lieutenant. There is one letter from umpire Babe Pinelli.

Biographical / Historical

Sidney “Cy” Jones was an employee of the famed New York Concessions conglomerate, Harry M. Stevens, Co. An avid sports fan and connoisseur of history and popular culture, Jones established and maintained relationships with many famous athletes beginning in the 1930’s and continuing through the 1980’s. Those he considered his personal friends included Joe DiMaggio, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Sid Luckman, and Jack Dempsey. Throughout his life, Jones corresponded with and accumulated objects directly from the athletes.

Abstract

A collection of correspondence between Cy Jones and notable baseball athletes and executives, and one umpire, dated between 1939 and 1961.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged with Baseball Hall of Famers, as of 2014, first, followed by players and others in alphabetical order by surname.

Due to the fragile nature of the original materials, researchers must use the photocopied version, located in the box.
