Scope and Contents

A collection of correspondence, agreements, programs, rosters, and financial information relating primarily to the Pittsburgh Pirates. This collection dates between 1886 and 1971 and was created and compiled by Barney Dreyfuss and William Benswanger. Items of note include the 1899 agreements for the sale of Louisville players to Pittsburgh, handbills for spring exhibition games in 1935 and 1936, and handwritten agreements with players.

Biographical / Historical

Barney Dreyfuss was an innovative team owner and policy maker, Dreyfuss was one of the most highly regarded executives in organized baseball. During his career, he merged his Louisville Colonels with the Pittsburgh Pirates to form a National League powerhouse, was one of the original advocates of a commissioner's office in baseball, helped to establish the modern World Series and was the Senior Circuit's first vice president. As president of the Pirates from 1900 until his death in 1932, Pittsburgh won six pennants, two World Series, and finished in third place or better 21 times. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.

Due to the age of the collection, it is unknown if any materials were removed during accessioning, none were removed during processing.

Processing Information

Items were placed in archival sleeves as needed, acid-free folders and document box.
