Correspondence, contract - Eugene Bailey and Philadelphia Athletics, 1918-1919
Scope and Contents
This collection contains a variety of materials, such as correspondence, contracts, souvenir programs, postcards, and tickets. A good portion relates to the Philadelphia Athletics and Shibe Park. There are scorecards for games played against the Stroudsburg Poconos, Anthracite All-Stars, the San Quentin All-Stars, and the Lincoln Athletics. There is a scout contract for Harry O'Donnell dated 1950, a Eugene Bailey contract and correspondence, dated 1918-1919, a Lewis Flick contract, 1944, and a Walter Berger contract, 1940. An item of interest is a letter written by John Rogers, Philadelphia Ball Club, dated February 24, 1894, inquiring if a retaining wall was going to be built so the club can know where to put their fence. The correspondence is written on various letterheads, such as John D. Shibe Caterer, Le Club de Baseball Athletiques de Quebec, Athletics Golden Jubilee, and The Ottawa Athletics. One color postcard shows a crowd watching the Philadelphia Record Electric Base-ball Score-Board, postmarked 1908. Another postcard has a caption written in Japanese, showing a large crowd on a city street. The tickets are from regular season games, exhibition games, and political rallies at Shibe Park.
